Remote Work Scoring Methodology
How EnvioGrid identifies and scores remote work-friendly locations including cafes, coworking spaces, and libraries.
Last updated: May 2025
Data Sources
Remote work locations are sourced from OpenStreetMap (OSM) using the Overpass API. We query for the following amenity types:
- Cafes (amenity=cafe) — with WiFi availability noted where available
- Libraries (amenity=library) — free public workspaces
- Coworking Spaces (office=coworking) — dedicated remote work facilities
- Community Centers (amenity=community_centre) — public gathering spaces
Scoring Criteria
Each location is evaluated based on:
- Proximity: Distance from ZIP code centroid (closer = higher relevance)
- Density: Number of remote work spots per square mile within the ZIP code
- Air Quality Context: Current AQI is displayed alongside each location to help users plan outdoor work sessions
Limitations
- OSM data may not include all locations, especially in rural areas
- WiFi availability is not always tagged in OSM — we display it when available
- Hours of operation are not always available in OSM data
